Matthew Gregory Lewis
Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775–1818) was an English novelist and dramatist, often referred to as "Monk" Lewis due to the success of his Gothic novel, The Monk. He was a significant figure in the development of Gothic literature and theater, known for his sensational and often controversial works that explored themes of horror, sexuality, and the supernatural. Lewis also served as a diplomat and a Member of Parliament. He inherited significant properties in Jamaica and documented his attempts to improve the conditions of his slaves in his posthumously published journal.
