John Steptoe

John Lewis Steptoe was an influential American author and illustrator of children's literature, best known for his work depicting the African-American experience and his adaptations of African and Native American folktales. He gained national attention at age 18 with his first book, 'Stevie' (1969), which was praised for its authentic portrayal of black urban life. Throughout his career, he wrote and illustrated numerous acclaimed books, including the Caldecott Honor books 'The Story of Jumping Mouse' and 'Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters'.
