Beatrix Potter was an English writer, illustrator, naturalist, and conservationist, best known for her children's books featuring animals, such as 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit'. Her books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. She was a pioneer of character merchandising, with Peter Rabbit being the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy. Potter also purchased and preserved significant amounts of land in the Lake District, which she later bequeathed to the National Trust.
