Madeleine St John (12 November 1941 – 18 June 2006) was an Australian novelist whose first book, The Women in Black (1993), established her as a distinctive observer of manners and social detail. Born in Castlecrag, Sydney, she moved to England in 1968 and wrote four novels, including The Essence of the Thing (shortlisted for the 1997 Man Booker Prize). Her work is noted for its wit, precise accumulation of detail and often comic tone. She died in London in 2006.
