Barbara Vine is the pen name used by English author Ruth Barbara Rendell (1930–2015). Under this pseudonym Rendell published a series of psychologically driven crime novels and standalone thrillers that emphasise atmosphere, family secrets and the inner lives of criminals and victims. Rendell enjoyed international commercial and critical success across both names, winning multiple awards for crime fiction and being made a life peer in 1997.
