Mabel Seeley
Mabel Seeley (née Hodnefield; March 25, 1903 – June 9, 1991) was an American mystery novelist known for novels set in the Midwest in the 1930s and 1940s. Often called “The Mistress of Mystery,” she published a string of critically praised crime novels—including The Listening House (1938), The Crying Sisters (1939) and The Chuckling Fingers (1941)—and served on the first board of directors of Mystery Writers of America. Her books frequently featured strong, independent female protagonists and were acclaimed by period reviewers such as the New York Times, the Saturday Review and The New Yorker.
