JapanesePoetryb. 1763 — d. 1828

Kobayashi Issa (小林一茶) was a Japanese poet and lay Buddhist priest, celebrated as one of the four great haiku masters of Japan. Born into a poor rural family, Issa's life was marked by personal tragedy and hardship, which informed his compassionate and often humorous haiku that focus on everyday life, peasants, animals, and Buddhist themes. His work remains widely read and translated, and he is known for combining tenderness with irony in short verse.
