Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875–1950) was an American writer best known for creating the characters Tarzan and John Carter of Mars. A prolific author of adventure and early science-fiction stories, Burroughs produced numerous serialized novels and pulp fiction that became enduring popular classics and spawned adaptations across film, radio, comics, and later television. His work helped popularize planetary romance and pulp adventure fiction in the early 20th century.
