Artificial intelligence leads to shockingly real danger for the Gray Man, Court Gentry, in this thirteenth installment of the series. Someone is systematically killing the world's leading experts on robotics and artificial intelligence through a series of incidents, including a car accident in Japan and a home invasion in Boston. The Gray Man and his partner, Zoya Zakharova, have assumed new identities and sought a quiet life in Central America to escape their enemies, which include billionaires, terrorists, and governments. Their cover is blown when an old acquaintance of Zoya's tracks them down and offers a job: to extract a Russian scientist on the kill list. Though they reject the mission, the mere association puts assassins on their trail, forcing the duo back on the run. They soon realize that whoever is hunting them appears to be one step ahead, indicating a powerful, possibly AI-driven, enemy that no one has encountered before.
