Stormdancer The Lotus War Book One

The Shima Imperium, a Japanese-inspired steampunk dystopia, is on the brink of environmental collapse, its traditions and myths decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. The island nation is choked with toxic pollution from the Blood Lotus, which fuels all their mechanical marvels. The Shōgun's hunters are charged with an impossible quest: to capture a legendary creature, the thunder tiger (griffin), which is believed to be extinct for over a century, with failure punishable by death. Yukiko, a child of the Fox clan with a secret talent that would see her executed by the Lotus Guild, accompanies her father on this hunt. When she becomes stranded alone in Shima's last wilderness, she finds herself with a furious, crippled griffin, Buruu. Despite his initial hostility, the pair form an indomitable, unlikely friendship that will grow to challenge the might of the collapsing empire. The novel follows Yukiko as she discovers the horrifying extent of the Shōgun's crimes and realizes that her life, and the life of the last thunder tiger, are tied to the fate of the dying land.
