Innocent

More than twenty years after the events of *Presumed Innocent*, the sequel *Innocent* brings back protagonist Rožat "Rusty" Sabich, who is now the sixty-year-old chief judge of the state Court of Appeals. Rusty once again finds himself at the center of a murder investigation following the mysterious death of his wife, Barbara, in their bed. The circumstances, including Rusty's delay in reporting the death, his candidacy for a higher court, and a recent extramarital affair with his senior law clerk, Anna Vostic, lead to his indictment for murder. This sets up a riveting courtroom rematch between Sabich and his long-time nemesis, acting prosecuting attorney Tommasino "Tommy" Molto, who had unsuccessfully prosecuted Rusty decades earlier. The novel explores themes of guilt, innocence, and moral uncertainty through the perspectives of Rusty, his son Nat, Molto, and Anna.
