Island of Bones

The third novel in the Crowther and Westerman historical mystery series is set in Cumbria in 1783. The reclusive anatomist Gabriel Crowther, also known as Lord Keswick, is called home to his former family estate after the tomb of the first Earl of Greta, which was thought to be undisturbed for three hundred years, is opened to reveal 'one body too many.' Crowther, who has shunned his title and chosen comfortable seclusion for thirty years since his brother was hanged for the murder of their father, is brought back to confront his family's dark and bloody history. Accompanied by his partner, the forthright Mrs. Harriet Westerman, the pair investigates the anonymous corpse and a town caught between ancient folklore and modern justice. Crowther discovers that his past will not stay buried as he attempts to unravel a mystery that resurfaces a secret history.
