P.I. V.I. Warshawski reluctantly agrees to coach the girls' basketball team at her South Chicago alma mater. Her efforts to secure desperately needed funds for the struggling squad lead her to the headquarters of By-Smart, a global retail empire. Conscience is in short supply at By-Smart, except for Billy Bysen, the earnest teenage grandson of the chain's founder. When Billy disappears, along with a mysterious document desired by By-Smart's management, V.I. is hurled onto a twisted, body-strewn path that reveals some of Chicago's dirtiest secrets.
