Emma Woodhouse, a "handsome, clever, and rich" young woman of twenty, lives with her father in the village of Highbury, convinced of her own talent for matchmaking. After her success in marrying off her governess, Emma decides to take on the task of finding a suitable husband for her new friend, Harriet Smith, a girl of unknown parentage. She advises Harriet to reject the proposal of a respectable young farmer, Robert Martin, in favor of the village vicar, Mr. Elton. Her matchmaking attempts lead to misjudgments, social blunders, and comic misunderstandings, especially when Mr. Elton proposes to Emma herself, before marrying someone else. Emma's neighbor and friend, Mr. George Knightley, the only person who openly criticizes her behavior, observes her meddling with disapproval. The arrival of Frank Churchill, Mr. Weston's charming son, and the reserved, accomplished Jane Fairfax introduces new complications and romantic intrigue. Through a series of events, including the revelation of a secret engagement and a moment of sharp rebuke for her thoughtless rudeness, Emma's self-deception and pride are exposed, leading her to question her own judgment. She eventually realizes that the man she truly loves is Mr. Knightley. To her delight, he reciprocates her feelings, and the novel concludes with the happy resolution of several romantic plots, culminating in their marriage.
