The Nameless Bard, who was exiled by the Harpers after being judged responsible for the death of his apprentices, finds his new trial dissolve into chaos upon the arrival of the monster Grypht, which is accompanied by a string of disappearances and murder. It is up to the bard's friends—Alias the swordswoman, Akabar the mage, Dragonbait the paladin, and Ruskettle the thief—to prove that an ancient evil god, Moander the Darkbringer, is behind the destruction. Akabar the mage is granted visions of Moander's return and sets out to gather the group for a quest. To save the Realms, Alias and her companions must find Nameless and convince him to make a sacrifice of his own precious power before Moander can return to claim the world.
