Leaves of Grass, 1860 The 150th Anniversary Facsimile Edition
Walt Whitman
This is the 150th Anniversary Facsimile Edition of the third edition of Walt Whitman's pivotal poetry collection, originally published in May 1860. The 1860 edition was a significant expansion, featuring 146 new poems added to the original 32, and was reorganized into a 'bible of American civic religion' that could be cited chapter and verse. Published during a period of ideological and political divisions on the eve of the Civil War, Whitman intended this edition to be a 'Great construction of the New Bible' to save the nation, transforming himself into a prophet of spiritual democracy. This facsimile faithfully reproduces the original 1860 volume and includes a new, thought-provoking introduction by historian Jason Stacy, as well as annotations that provide detailed historical context for the poems.
