Hatch is the second book in Kenneth Oppel's The Overthrow science-fiction trilogy. The first alien rain brought seeds that grew into dangerous plants that burrowed, strangled, and fed. Protagonists Seth, Anaya, and Petra were strangely immune to the plants' toxins and found a way to combat them. But just as they achieve their first success, the rain begins again, this time bringing eggs. These eggs hatch into a new, terrifying threat: giant, bird-sized mosquitos that carry disease, borer worms that can eat through house foundations, and boat-sized water striders that carry away their prey. To make matters worse, the heroes are unable to help this time because they've been locked away in a government lab with other immune children. This confinement raises the central mystery: What is the secret of their immunity? Could they be part alien themselves, and whose side are they truly on?
