This volume is the inaugural part of a five-volume series presenting a panoramic chronicle of women's history in the West, edited by Georges Duby and Michelle Perrot. Informed by the work of seventy-five distinguished historians, Volume I, edited by Pauline Schmitt Pantel, offers fresh insight into more than twenty centuries of Greek and Roman history, encompassing a landscape from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. It brings women from the margins of ancient history into the fore by drawing upon a wide range of sources, including gravestones, floor plans, papyrus rolls, vase paintings, and literary works. The book illustrates how representations of women evolved during this age and explores the imaginative history of women and the relations between the sexes.
