Days before his release from prison, Shadow Moon learns that his wife, Laura, has died in a car accident. Released early and with nowhere to go, he accepts a job as a bodyguard and errand boy for the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday, a mysterious con man he meets on a plane. As they travel across America, Shadow discovers that Mr. Wednesday is actually an incarnation of the Norse god Odin, and he is trying to rally the ancient Old Gods—who were brought to America by immigrants but whose power has waned as their believers dwindled—for a coming war against the New Gods, the modern deities of technology, media, and celebrity. Shadow is pulled into this epic, secret conflict that takes him on a strange and dark journey into the hidden heart of America and its mythology.
