Patrick Norris returns home from his service in Afghanistan, eager to pursue his dream of a sport fishing business. However, he is met with disaster: the family's avocado ranch in the San Diego foothills has been destroyed by a massive wildfire, leaving his parents facing ruin. Patrick puts his dream on hold to help his family. His younger brother, Ted, who is gentle but troubled by dark fixations, worships Patrick and is desperate for his approval. Seeking a way to prove himself, Ted is drawn into a circle of violent, criminal misfits, and his quest for redemption threatens to put his family in peril. As Patrick falls in love with an unusual woman named Iris, Ted's plan goes terribly wrong, and he disappears.
