Grace, a dedicated therapist in Montreal, stumbles upon a man who has just failed to hang himself, and her immediate instinct is to help. Her feelings for this charismatic, guarded stranger quickly become complicated and far from straightforward. Concurrently, Grace's troubled teenage patient, Annie, runs away to reinvent herself in New York as a ruthless, aspiring actress, unburdened by attachments. Meanwhile, Grace's ex-husband Mitch, also a therapist, leaves the woman he loves to work with a struggling native community in the bleak Arctic. The novel follows the intertwined lives of these four complex characters from Montreal and New York to Hollywood and Rwanda, exploring the many dangers and the imperative of making ourselves available to—and responsible for—those dearest to us.
