Left Behind A Novel of the Earth's Last Days
Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins
The book, which marks the start of the 'Left Behind' series, depicts the beginning of the end of the world based on a dispensationalist interpretation of biblical prophecy, primarily from the Book of Revelation. The story opens as millions of people around the globe inexplicably and instantly vanish in what is soon identified as the Rapture. Among those 'left behind' are Pan-Continental airline pilot Rayford Steele, who is aboard a 747 when passengers disappear, and global journalist Cameron 'Buck' Williams. Rayford returns to a chaotic Chicago to discover his wife and son are among the missing, a tragedy that forces him to confront the truth his wife preached. Joined by his daughter Chloe, who also begins a search for answers, they meet with their church's associate pastor, Bruce Barnes, who was left behind due to a lack of true faith. The four become the core of the 'Tribulation Force,' dedicating themselves to evangelism and survival during the seven-year Tribulation. Meanwhile, a charismatic Romanian politician named Nicolae Carpathia rises rapidly to prominence, becoming the head of the United Nations and promising world peace, a figure the group suspects is the Antichrist.
