Bedtime Story
Robert J. Wiersema
Novelist Christopher Knox is experiencing a creative slump and a struggling marriage, finding his only true joy in his relationship with his eleven-year-old son, David, through their nightly reading ritual. For David's birthday, Chris buys a book from a local used bookstore, *To the Four Directions*, by his favorite childhood author, Lazarus Took. Although David initially resists the unfamiliar book, he quickly becomes so enthralled that he cannot put it down. Shortly after sneaking the book to read alone, David suffers an inexplicable seizure and falls into a state of unconsciousness, with doctors unable to determine the cause. The only thing that calms his nightly recurring seizures is being read to from the strange new book. Meanwhile, David wakes up within the pages of the story, finding himself as the peasant boy hero, on a quest for a mysterious Sunstone in a perilous, magical world created to capture the hearts and souls of children. Convinced that the secret to David's collapse lies within the book, Chris embarks on a desperate cross-continent journey to find the truth about the mysterious author, Lazarus Took, and save his son from the narrative that has consumed him.
