The play is one of Shakespeare's darkest comedies, set in Venice and Belmont. The merchant Antonio secures a loan from the Jewish moneylender Shylock to help his friend Bassanio, who needs money to woo the wealthy heiress Portia. Antonio, whose wealth is tied up in ships at sea, agrees to Shylock's unusual bond: a 'pound of flesh' from Antonio if the loan is not repaid by the appointed time. Bassanio successfully wins Portia's hand in Belmont by choosing the correct casket. Meanwhile, news arrives in Venice that Antonio's ships have been lost, and he is unable to repay the debt. Shylock, who has also been angered by his daughter Jessica's elopement with a Christian, Lorenzo, demands the forfeiture of the bond in court. The play reaches its climax in the courtroom, where Portia, disguised as a male lawyer named Balthasar, uses her legal brilliance to save Antonio by arguing that Shylock is entitled to the pound of flesh but not a single drop of blood.
