Following the fall of Baghdad, two Iraqi boys stumble upon armed men looting the city zoo, an act that conceals a deeper secret: the ransacking of a concealed underground weapons lab and the release of something horrific. Seven years later, Louisiana state veterinarian Lorna Polk discovers a shipwrecked fishing trawler on a barrier island. The crew is missing, but the vessel holds a terrifying cargo of caged exotic animals that are part of a black market smuggling ring.
