This well-illustrated edition is a retelling of Oscar Wilde's classic tale by Mary Hollingsworth. The story begins when the eponymous Giant returns home after a seven-year absence and finds children playing in his beautiful garden. He selfishly builds a high wall to keep them out. As a result, Spring and Summer refuse to visit his garden, leaving the Giant's garden in perpetual winter, with the trees refusing to bloom and the birds refusing to sing because they miss the children. The Giant shivers in his large bed while Hail, Snow, North Wind, and Frost dance across the cold, lifeless garden. One morning, the Giant hears a beautiful noise, prompting him to open his heart and welcome the children back into his previously forbidden garden, which is eventually rewarded by an encounter with an unusual little child.
