Whirlwind

The novel is a gripping epic set in Tehran, Iran, in early 1979, during the turmoil and chaos of the Iranian Revolution, which resulted in the fall of the Shah and the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini. The story follows the fortunes of a group of foreign helicopter pilots, primarily from the British company S-G Helicopters (a subsidiary of Struan's/Noble House), along with Iranian officials and oil men and their families, who are caught in the violence and political upheaval. Facing the threat of losing their helicopters and company to the revolutionary forces, the pilots must concoct a dangerous, intricate plan to evacuate their personnel and machines out of the crumbling country in a race against time. Inspired by the true struggle of Bristow Helicopters to escape the region, the book is a fast-paced tale of war, love, ingenuity, and high-stakes intrigue, and is chronologically the last novel in Clavell's Asian Saga.
