Rising Sun, Falling Shadow is the thrilling historical sequel to The Far Side of the Sky, set in Japanese-occupied Shanghai in 1943 during World War II. The Japanese juggernaut has swallowed the city, trapping droves of American and British citizens along with thousands of 'stateless' German Jewish refugees. Newlyweds Dr. Franz Adler and his wife, Soon Yi (Sunny), struggle to keep the city's only hospital for refugee Jews operational. Bowing to Nazi pressure, the Japanese military forces 20,000 Jewish refugees, including the Adlers, to relocate to the congested one-square-kilometer 'Shanghai Ghetto.' For those trapped inside, heat, hunger, and tropical diseases become constant threats. While Franz focuses on the hospital, Sunny, a Shanghai native desperate to defend her home, is drawn into the local Resistance movement. The Adlers must navigate a world of subversion, espionage, Nazi treachery, and ever-worsening conditions to keep their hospital open and their family united and safe.
