When her unfaithful husband, Craig, dies in Australia in a car accident shortly after moving out of the family home, Laura Wells decides to return to her native Lancashire to help nurse her ageing mother. After all, her two children, Ryan and Deb, are grown up now, and Deb has made it plain that she holds her mother responsible for her father's desertion. Back in England Laura's problems mount up as she looks for a job and somewhere to live. When she answers an ad for a live-in housekeeper, working for convalescent former reporter Kit Mallinder, it seems that her prayers have been answered. Kit appreciates Laura's domestic skills, and each enjoys the other's company. But Laura has an uphill struggle to face as she starts to rebuild her life. Craig's treachery has driven her family apart, and it is Laura, stalwart and courageous, who must resolve their many problems before she can embark on a new relationship of her own...
