As the new Queen Elizabeth I accedes to the throne in 1558, she faces two great dangers: the threat of foreign invasion and her perilous passion for her childhood friend, Robert Dudley. Dudley is already married to Amy, who hears the news of Elizabeth's triumph with dread, knowing it will draw her ambitious husband back to court.
