A Single Thread A Novel

Set in 1932, the story follows Violet Speedwell, a 'surplus woman'—a generation of English women left unlikely to marry after the losses of World War I, which claimed her brother and fiancé. Escaping a life of caring for her embittered mother, Violet moves to Winchester for an office job and a taste of independence. She finds community and creative fulfillment in a volunteer group known as the 'broderers,' who embroider cushions and kneelers for the magnificent Winchester Cathedral. As Violet finds her own path and struggles against societal prejudices toward single women, she must also contend with the growing shadow of another potential war looming on the horizon.
