Fire by Night

Set during the American Civil War, this novel explores the transformative journeys of two very different young Northern women. Lovely Julia Hoffman, from a well-to-do Philadelphia family, becomes a Union nurse to try and win the attention of a fierce abolitionist, Nathaniel Greene, shocking her family. Phoebe Bigelow, a misfit from western Virginia, enlists in the Union army under false pretenses as a male soldier to escape a life of domestic servitude. As they both confront the harsh realities of war and suffering, their initial motivations are tested, leading them on unexpected paths of sacrifice, love, and self-discovery. The story, part of the Refiner's Fire series, explores themes of faith, service, and the search for purpose amidst the chaos of a shattered nation.
