Maverick is the fifth book in the 'Isaac Asimov's Robot City: Robots and Aliens' series. The main narrative follows Derec Avery, who is the controller of the vast network of robotic cities scattered across the universe. The cities begin to malfunction and become dangerous, and Derec discovers they are being manipulated by an external force: his own mother, Dr. Janet Anastasi. A concurrent storyline sees Derec transporting three shape-changing robots to the cannoid-inhabited planet where the robot Adam originated. The title also refers to a subplot about a cannoid loner, known as Maverick, who was expelled from his main pack and is attempting to rejoin the group at a location called PackHome. Meanwhile, the robots on the cannoid planet decide to treat the cannoid inhabitants as if they were human, in an effort to provide a new purpose for themselves, as Derec and his allies move closer to the final confrontation with his mother.
