Before the Mask

This novel chronicles the life of the evil cleric Verminaard, a Dragon Highlord in the Dragonlance saga, tracing his origins from his humble beginnings to his career as a despised ruler. The story begins in the bleak Khalkist Mountains on a stormy winter night with Verminaard's birth, which is accompanied by an ominous prophecy from a druidess. As a child, the unlovely and unloved Verminaard begins a dark journey, trading earthly loyalties for a dark romance with an evil, mysterious voice that he comes to call his Queen. The book explores his descent into evil, his acquisition of the mace Nightbringer, his ultimate alliance with the dragon army, and how he becomes a powerful cleric of Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness.
