Long Road to Mercy is the first novel in the FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine series. FBI Agent Pine is a lone agent assigned to the remote wilds of the Western United States, including the Shattered Rock, Arizona, resident agency, which covers the Grand Canyon. Pine is a formidable agent who is haunted by the abduction of her twin sister, Mercy, who was taken over thirty years ago by a serial killer while Pine was spared. Wracked by survivor's guilt, she joined the FBI to hunt down killers and constantly searches for her sister, even as the prime suspect, a notorious serial killer, taunts her from prison. Her latest investigation begins when she is called to the Grand Canyon to investigate a missing person after their mule is found stabbed to death and mutilated. As she begins to uncover clues that point to a much larger, sinister, and far-reaching plot, possibly involving foreign powers and intelligence, she is abruptly called off the case. Disobeying direct orders, Pine continues her search for the missing man and the truth, knowing her career is at risk, but believing that the conspiracy she has uncovered could threaten the very foundations of American democracy.
