The Twelve (Passage Trilogy)
Justin Cronin
The Twelve is the second installment in Justin Cronin's Passage Trilogy, a horror-fantasy novel set in a post-apocalyptic future where the United States has been overrun by vampire-like creatures called virals, who are the victims of a highly contagious, man-made virus (Project Noah). The story shifts between two timelines: the terrifying origins of the apocalypse and one hundred years in the future. In the present day, as the virus spreads, the novel follows three strangers navigating the chaos: Lila, an expectant mother and doctor shattered by the violence; Kittridge, known as "Last Stand in Denver," now forced to flee his stronghold; and April, a teenager fighting to guide her little brother through a landscape of death and ruin. One hundred years later, Amy Bellafonte—the protagonist from The Passage and the only one to react as the researchers had hoped—and the remaining human survivors fight on for humankind's salvation. They are unaware that the enemy has evolved, and a dark new order has arisen with a vision of the future more horrifying than extinction. The survivors must attempt to destroy the original "Twelve" virals—the first-infected—to neutralize the entire epidemic, a mission that will require one of them to pay the ultimate price.
