Zarek, a former Roman slave, has endured a lifetime of suffering and 900 years as an exiled Dark-Hunter, a soulless guardian who defends mankind. Scarred both physically and psychologically, he is bitter, feared, and believes that eternity is nothing but solitude and insanity. It is up to Astrid, an emotionally detached nymph and sister to the three Fates, to judge whether Zarek is too vicious to be redeemed. She is sent to push him to his limits in the isolated Alaska wilderness. Zarek wants the truth about his exile, and when Astrid, a woman who can see straight to the truth, enters his life, she offers a point of light in the darkness. As she touches him and shatters his cold heart, Zarek begins to want to be human and love again, but he questions how an ex-slave whose soul is owned by a Greek goddess can ever hope to be with a fiery star.
