The play is set in the 1940s in the shabby but vibrant New Orleans French Quarter. It tells the story of Blanche DuBois, a fading Southern belle and former high school teacher, who arrives unexpectedly to stay with her younger, pregnant sister, Stella Kowalski. Blanche has lost the family's ancestral home, Belle Reve, and claims to be on leave from her job due to 'nerves,' but her pretentious, delicate airs immediately clash with the raw, animalistic vitality of Stella's working-class husband, Stanley Kowalski. As Blanche attempts to secure a new life and a romance with Stanley's friend Mitch, she clings to an idealized version of the past while battling her own alcoholism and a deeply troubling history of promiscuity, which Stanley relentlessly investigates and ultimately exposes. The psychological and sexual tension between Blanche and Stanley escalates, leading to a tragic climax where Blanche is brutally violated by Stanley, resulting in her complete mental breakdown. The play concludes with Stella allowing her sister to be taken to a psychiatric institution, a final, devastating surrender to reality and Stanley's control.
