One Door Away from Heaven: A Novel

Michelina Bellsong, at twenty-eight, is living in a dusty trailer park and contemplating the troubled direction of her life, unable to find a way to change. Her path shifts when a new family moves in next door, and she meets nine-year-old Leilani, a disabled but spirited girl. Leilani’s stepfather, Preston Maddoc, is a fanatical investigator of UFO sightings who claims that by Leilani's tenth birthday, aliens will either heal her or take her away to a better life on their world. Slowly, Micky realizes that Leilani's disabled older brother has already vanished and is supposedly 'gone to the stars,' leading Micky to believe Leilani will be dead by her next birthday. When the Maddoc family disappears, Micky embarks on a desperate cross-America quest to find and save the child, pitting her against the cunning and fearsome Preston Maddoc. Her journey of incredible peril brings a burned-out detective to her side, leading them through darkness to startling discoveries and a chance at redemption for Micky's own wounded soul.
