When a boy discovers an airplane in his closet, he decides to take it for a flight. He flies high into space until his plane runs out of fuel and he makes an emergency landing on the moon. While there, he discovers he is not alone—a Martian has also landed on the moon due to engine trouble. The boy and the Martian, both strangers in a strange place, learn that they share similar fears and needs. They work together to fix their vehicles, forming an unlikely friendship as they help each other find their way back home.
