Alex Donnelly returns to Copper Ridge, Oregon, to uphold a promise made to his late best friend and brother-in-arms. He finds himself inheriting a ranch and the responsibility for his friend's sister, Clara Campbell. Clara, who has endured the loss of both her parents and her brother, is fiercely independent and hasn't asked for a hero to solve her problems or her struggling ranch. Despite the mounting bills and difficulties, she is reluctant to accept Alex's assistance. Though initially drawn to another man in town, Clara and Alex slowly acknowledge their intense mutual attraction.
