Gavin Menzies
Rowan Gavin Paton Menzies (14 August 1937 – 12 April 2020) was a British naval officer and author best known for 1421: The Year China Discovered the World. A former Royal Navy submarine lieutenant-commander, he argued controversially that Chinese fleets reached the Americas and circumnavigated the globe in the 15th century; professional historians have widely rejected his claims and characterized his work as pseudohistory. Menzies published several popular books advancing these theories and achieved substantial commercial success and public attention.
