Walter J. Ciszek, S.J.

Walter Joseph Ciszek, S.J. was a Polish-American Jesuit priest known for his clandestine missionary work in the Soviet Union between 1939 and 1963. He spent fifteen years in confinement and hard labor in the Gulag, plus five preceding years in Moscow's Lubyanka prison. After his release in 1963, he wrote two books, 'He Leadeth Me' and 'With God in Russia,' and served as a spiritual director. His cause for canonization was opened but later suspended.
