Kevin Powers

Kevin Powers is an American novelist, poet, and Iraq War veteran. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, he served as a machine gunner in the U.S. Army in Mosul and Tal Afar, Iraq, in 2004 and 2005. After his honorable discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in poetry from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a Michener Fellow. His debut novel, The Yellow Birds, drew on his wartime experiences and received widespread critical acclaim.
