Jerome David Salinger (January 1, 1919 – January 27, 2010) was an American writer best known for his novel The Catcher in the Rye and a number of influential short stories published in The New Yorker. After early literary success he became famously reclusive, publishing little after the mid-1960s while continuing to write privately.
