Valerie Helene Mendes is an English novelist, poet, and former editor. Born in Buckinghamshire in 1939, she began her career in journalism and publishing, working with companies such as Oxford University Press and Penguin Books. She is known for her young adult fiction, historical novels for adults, and her memoir, 'Not Only But Also'. She is the mother of theatre and film director Sir Sam Mendes.
