Betty Smith (born Elisabeth Lillian Wehner) was an American novelist and playwright, best known for her 1943 bestselling novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which drew heavily on her own experiences growing up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Despite leaving school at fourteen, she pursued higher education at the University of Michigan and the Yale School of Drama, eventually becoming a successful writer and dramatist.
