Andrea Hirata
Andrea Hirata is a prominent Indonesian novelist, best known for his semi-autobiographical debut novel, 'Laskar Pelangi' (The Rainbow Troops), which became a massive international bestseller. Born in Gantung, Belitung, he grew up in a poor family near a government-owned tin mine. Despite his humble beginnings, he pursued higher education in economics at the University of Indonesia and later earned a master's degree in Europe, studying at the Université de Paris and Sheffield Hallam University. He is also known for his advocacy for education and literacy, having established the Museum Kata (Word Museum) in his hometown.
