Irène Némirovsky (born Irina Lvovna Nemirovskaya) was a novelist born in Kiev in 1903 who wrote in French and lived most of her life in France. She achieved early success with novels such as David Golder and Le Bal. Of Jewish origin, she and her family fled the Russian Revolution and settled in Paris. Denied French nationality in the 1930s and subjected to anti-Jewish laws during the German occupation, she was arrested in 1942 and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. Her unfinished novel Suite Française was published posthumously and brought renewed international attention to her work.
