Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008) was a Russian novelist, historian and outspoken critic of the Soviet regime. He is best known for works exposing the Soviet forced-labor camp system, especially The Gulag Archipelago, and for novels blending fiction and historical investigation such as One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Cancer Ward. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970, Solzhenitsyn's writing combined moral seriousness, historical research and personal testimony.
